A Quick Guide to grind selection:
For most conditions,
pick one of our listed grinds
- these have broad ranges and can be used in virtually all common
conditions. For other "special purpose" grinds, contact us. Click for Work

Central grinds:
- XC01
- New this season - Very Fine, cold dry snow at lower humidity down to -15/-22°C;.
- XC02
- Fine, dry snow at lower humidity down to -10/-15°C;
will work effectively up to -1C.
- 615b
- New this season - The 615b is a result of extensive testing last season. This
grind is for skate skis and has a visible angled interference pattern. The interference pattern is
visually "busy" but in truth it provides angled bands of less structure. The 615b has a very easy release. While
it has a similar appearance to the MVX (which is also an interference pattern grind), it is more delicate and
is intended for colder conditions. It's not a grind for wet conditions. It will run well in colder new and machined
groomed snow (transformed by grooming rather than thaw/freeze) that stays below freezing.
- MVX
- A half-depth diagonal-biased layered cross structure grind.
Good general purpose skate grind for medium humidity,
new and
machine-groomed snow conditions.
Free running all-around skate grind, popular in Washington's Methow Valley, "Cascade
east slope", Montana, Colorado, and other mountain areas.
- MVL
- A half-depth linear grind at 24 lines/cm. Good general purpose
grind for medium humidity, "Cascade east
slope", and other generally sub-freezing
conditions. Typically runs better than XC02 as temps get warmer and humidity
is higher. Most often picked for classic skis, but runs well on skate skis
in some conditions.
- LJ03
- General purpose, large crystals, and new snows, from "violet" and
down to -5°C; will work effectively up into "plus degrees," especially good with classic skis, and
overlaps well with R2.3
- SLC02
- Excellent klister grind for classic skis; for transformed large crystals, warm new snow,
and moist conditions.
- R2.3
- Warmer, higher-humidity snows, transformed and transforming
snows with large crystals, from "violet" and
up, but will work effectively down to -3°C snow
temps
Note:
MVL, MVX & 615b
have a depth of 0.02 mm. XC01 and XC02 are 0.04 depth that are polished
down to a smaller depth. Other grinds
have a depth of 0.04 mm.
Grind Details
The "MV-" Series:
Our new generation half-depth grinds.
Designated "MV-", these grinds were initially developed
for the local "Methow Valley" climate. These grinds
have shown themselves to be very free running general purpose
grinds, for medium-humidity, machine-groomed and new snow conditions,
and have a wide range of application in varied climates. The MV-
series grinds have a depth of 0.02mm rather than the traditional
grind depth of 0.04mm.
The MVX grind has a
unique diagonal-biased layered crossing pattern that is more
free running and less "grabby" than
typical cross patterns, and is especially recommended for skating
skis.
MVX is good for machine-groomed and new snow with medium to fine
crystal structures.
The MVL is a 0.02mm depth linear grind at 24 lines/cm that is
very effective on classic skis. It is good in medium humidity,
machine-groomed and new snow conditions. Note: the MVL typically
runs better than XC02 as temperatures get warmer and moisture
content increases.
Due to the relatively shallow depth of the MVL and MVX grinds,
we strongly recommend that you do not use a steel scraper on skis
that have these (or any!) grinds.
The "R-" Series:
Our premier, compound grinds
Designated "R" for their development at the Ramsau
World Championships, these grinds are not only faster
in coarse, high-humidity conditions, but have a wide range of application,
due to the three different structures at the tip, center, and
tail of the ski. These grinds are especially recommended for skating
skis, but are also popular on classic skis (part of the effect
of the center grind is obviated by the kick wax of a classic ski
- but at the same time, the extra friction caused by the kick
wax means greater consolidation and glazing, so that the two-layer
tail grind on the "R" series is very effective.)

After extensive testing,
the "R-" grinds were updated,
and are now designated as the .3 series, as R2.3, etc. The difference
is that the grind on the back 1/3 of the ski is now double layered
for still greater relief of contact-induced drag.
The "XC-" Series:
Originally developed for Soldier Hollow
The "XC" stands for "extra cold." This grind
is a development of the LJ- series grinds: after structuring,
the base is polished once more at an extremely low pressure. This
results in a structure approximately 30% more shallow, with extremely
smooth "flat areas" between the actual structure.
The most popular of
the XC- series is the XC02. Very lively, and aimed at snow from
-2 to -15°C at low humidity (50% and
lower), this grind performs very well up to -1°C in dryer,
aggressive snow.
